Will, habit, and the limits of character

If insight does not change you, what does?

Aristotle. Nicomachean Ethics, II.1-4. c. 340 BCE. primary text.

What it argues

Virtues are hexeis, stable dispositions produced by repeated activity, the way a builder becomes a builder by building. Knowing the good is not the mechanism; practice is. Character is therefore an engineering problem about repeated acts, not a matter of insight.

The probe

Name one disposition you want. Write the smallest repeated act that would produce it, and how often you would have to do it.
