The self-model

Why does a representation feel like an owner?

Thomas Metzinger. The Ego Tunnel, after Being No One. 2009. monograph.

What it argues

The self is a model the brain builds of itself, and it is transparent: you see through it rather than at it, which is why it feels like an owner rather than a representation. There is no additional entity behind the model. This is the rigorous statement of a conclusion the mystics reached by other means and without the argument.

The probe

Name three facts about yourself your self-model cannot represent from the inside: your blind spot, your face as others see it, your own death.
