Minds under failure, minds from inside
Is your past continuous, or does it arrive in fragments?
What it argues
Involuntary memory returns a past moment whole, triggered by a sensation rather than by will, and shows that the self is not continuous but resurrected in fragments. The narrator's project is to recover time that ordinary memory cannot reach.
The probe
Write one memory triggered by a sensory detail, a smell, a sound, a texture. Do not use chronology.
The source
In Search of Lost Time, Combray — Marcel Proust, 1913-1927. The link goes to the text or to a catalogue record for it, not to a summary. This one is a catalogue record: the entry gives you the question and the probe, not the argument in the author's words.
