Feeling and the body

If perception is inference, what is the self inferring?

Anil Seth. Being You. 2021. monograph.

What it argues

Perception is controlled hallucination, corrected by sensory prediction error, and the self is a prediction about the body's regulation rather than a thing perceived. The account is predictive-processing based and makes the self a process with a function: keeping the organism viable.

The probe

Find one place today where you perceived what you expected rather than what was there. Reading a familiar word wrong is enough.
