Are you a type of person, or a distribution of states?

Christopher Soto and Oliver John · The Next Big Five Inventory (BFI-2), JPSP 113 · 2017

B · Replicated, size uncertain

The Big Five are the most replicated structure in personality description. The BFI-2 measures them with 60 items and fifteen facets, and it is a trait instrument: it asks for general tendencies. Experience-sampling work shows the same person's state levels move across situations by amounts comparable to the differences between people.

ProbeRate your extraversion for today, then for the last year. If the two differ, the trait is a summary of states, not a cause of them.
